OPINION: Ontario saves $21 Billion since 2018 avoiding Basic Income for OW and ODSP Recipients.
Published: January 13, 2022
The results are startling…
We’re going to compare Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program based on their statistics keeping it at maximum Shelter and Basic Needs allowances versus a Basic Income at 75% of the poverty level. For this comparison we are going to use any scenario of Basic Income by the PBO as they are all under $30,000 a year anyway, and run this comparison from November 2018 to November 2021. So just 3 short years.
Combined it was $21,709,199,849 and that is if every case got maximum Shelter and Basic Needs for Individuals, Couples, and Single Parents with 1 dependant. Obviously everyone’s case is different and this is just a average scenario. But it goes to show that you have to question if Basic Income would have prevented over $20 Billion less of poverty costs on the general population. In retrospect that is about 1.5 years of spending on ALL Social Services across the province. Avoiding Basic Income was to avoid a 150% increase into spending, of course not considering the financial impact of doing nothing and not even raising rates.
Raising the rates just with inflation for Ontario Disability Support Program would have cost approximately $1,131 per single recipient for 3 years. (Using in 2018 — $1169, in 2019 — $1192, in 2020 — $1215, in 2021 — $1239)
What makes you think they even want to entertain the idea of helping the average worker?
We need a new thinking of Social Support that isn’t tied to a province that clearly won’t even cover Cost of Living Increases.
